The Power of Herbal Shampoos: Reetha, Amla, and Shikakai for Natural Hair Cleansing

By Megha Sahgal

In today's world of chemical-based hair products, opting for a natural herbal shampoo can be a transformative step towards healthier hair. Unlike commercial shampoos that often contain harsh chemicals, Ayurvedic ingredients like Reetha (Soapnut), Amla (Indian Gooseberry), and Shikakai (Acacia Concinna) provide gentle cleansing while nourishing the scalp and hair.

Benefits of Using Herbal Shampoos

  1. Gentle and Chemical-Free – Free from sulfates, parabens, and artificial additives that can strip hair of its natural moisture.
  2. Encourages Hair Growth – Amla is loaded with vitamin C, which enhances collagen production and supports hair follicle health.
  3. Soothes Scalp and Reduces Dandruff – Shikakai has antifungal and antimicrobial properties that help prevent dandruff and scalp irritation.
  4. Enhances Shine and Volume – Reetha naturally cleanses without drying, leaving hair soft and voluminous.
  5. Strengthens Hair Roots – These herbs provide essential nutrients that reinforce hair strength, reducing breakage and hair fall.

Understanding the Key Ingredients

Reetha (Soapnut)

  • A natural cleanser with mild foaming properties
  • Effectively removes excess oil, dirt, and buildup
  • Enhances hair texture and leaves it feeling soft

Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

  • Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants
  • Strengthens hair follicles and helps prevent premature graying
  • Improves scalp circulation, promoting thicker hair

Shikakai (Acacia Concinna)

  • Works as a natural conditioner, helping to detangle hair
  • Helps combat dandruff and soothes itchy scalp
  • Strengthens roots and reduces split ends

How to make your own DIY herbal shampoo

Making your own Ayurvedic herbal shampoo is simple, cost-effective, and completely natural. Here’s a step-by-step recipe:

Ingredients:

 5-6 Reetha pods (soapnuts)
2 tbsp Amla powder (or dried Amla pieces)
2 tbsp Shikakai powder (or dried Shikakai pieces)
 3 cups water
5-6 drops of essential oil (optional – rosemary, lavender, or tea tree)

Instructions:

  1. Soak Reetha, Amla, and Shikakai in water overnight.
  2. The next morning, boil the mixture for 15-20 minutes until the water reduces by half.
  3. Allow it to cool, then strain out the liquid using a sieve or muslin cloth.
  4. Store the liquid in a bottle and use it as your natural shampoo.
  5. Massage onto your scalp and hair, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.

This mixture should be good for 1 or 2 uses, depending on your hair length. You may store the remaining mixture in the refrigerator for upto a week. It is advisable to make small, fresh batches.

How to use herbal shampoos effectively

  • Oil Your Hair First – Herbal shampoos work best when used after oiling your hair with Herbal Edge Onion Hair Oil or coconut oil. That way your hair don't feel dry after the wash.
  • Use Lukewarm Water – Avoid hot water as it can dry out your scalp.
  • Massage Well – Let the shampoo sit for a few minutes to allow deep cleansing.
  • Follow with a Natural Conditioner – Aloe vera gel or a hibiscus rinse can add moisture and softness.
