If you own a neem wood comb, you already know the feeling: it glides differently from plastic. The teeth are rounded, not sharp, so it feels gentler on the scalp, and the wood itself has a warm, natural feel in the hand.
What makes it lovely is also what makes it need a little care. Our Neem Wood Comb is handcrafted from neem wood, unpolished and without lacquer, about 7 inches long, and available with or without a handle ($14). Unfinished wood looks and feels beautiful — and it does not love sitting in water.
The good news: looking after it takes about two minutes, and most of it is just keeping it dry.

Start with how you comb
Good comb care starts before cleaning, in how the comb is used day to day.
- Detangle first, before oiling or washing. Never drag a comb through knotted hair — work through the ends first, then move up, a section at a time.
- Be gentle with wet hair. If you oil, apply oil to dry or damp hair before shampooing, as part of your pre-shampoo ritual, and comb through gently to distribute it — don't yank through tangles.
- After oiling, a gentle comb-through helps spread the oil through the lengths, so hair feels smoother and more conditioned-looking.
Think of it as a slow tool, not a fast one. The less pulling, the longer the teeth stay smooth.
How to clean it
You don't need special products, and you definitely don't need to soak it.
- Lift the hair out after each use. Pull loose strands from between the teeth with your fingers. A quick pass now stops build-up later.
- Wipe it down. Use a soft, dry cloth for everyday cleaning. If it needs more, wipe with a barely damp cloth — never hold it under running water or leave it soaking in a bowl or sink.
- Dry it straight away. If the comb gets wet, wipe it with a cloth or tissue and let it air-dry fully before putting it away. Don't store it damp in a closed drawer or a steamy bathroom cabinet.
- Keep it out of constant humidity. A bedroom drawer or a dry shelf suits it better than a permanently damp bathroom ledge.
That's the whole cleaning routine. Dry, wipe, dry again.

Oil the comb itself, now and then
This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that keeps the wood in good shape.
Every so often — especially if the wood starts to look dry or pale — rub a few drops of coconut, olive, or neem oil over the comb with your fingers, then set it aside to absorb. This helps the wood stay conditioned-looking and is the traditional way to help avoid cracks in an unpolished wooden comb.
Wipe off any excess before you use it on your hair, so you're not adding oil you didn't intend.
What to avoid
- Soaking it. Long soaks are the fastest way to warp, swell, or crack unfinished wood.
- Leaving it wet. Wet storage invites roughness and, over time, cracks.
- Heat and harsh cleaners. Don't dry it on a radiator or with a hair dryer on high, and don't scrub it with strong detergents or abrasive pads.
- Dropping it on hard floors. Wood teeth can chip — and a chipped tooth is a rough tooth.
When is it time for a new one?
A well-kept neem comb can serve you for a long time, but wood does wear. Consider replacing it if a tooth feels rough, splintered, or chipped, even after wiping and oiling, if a crack runs through the wood, or if it no longer feels smooth gliding through your hair.
A rough tooth can catch and snag, which defeats the whole point of a gentle comb — so don't keep persevering with a damaged one.
Making it part of your ritual
If you like a simple routine, pair the comb with the oiling ritual it was made for: detangle gently, apply Onion Hair Oil to dry or damp hair before shampooing, comb through gently to distribute the oil, then wash as usual. That's the same pairing behind the Root & Ritual Duo — Onion Hair Oil with the Neem Wood Comb.

The short version
Keep it dry, wipe it after use, oil the wood now and then, store it somewhere dry, and replace it if a tooth chips or cracks. Two minutes of care, and your neem comb stays the gentle, smooth tool it was meant to be.
